You Don't Need to Fear the Estrogen Content In Impossible Burgers
No, the plant-based patties will not cause you to grow breasts.
Between Beyond Meat, Impossible Foods, and other emerging plant-based meat companies, it’s never been a better time to be a vegetarian or vegan. Nor has it ever been easier to cut back on meat consumption in general, for the sake of your health and for the sake of the planet. Diners who want to occasionally sub an Angus patty for a plant-based one can now find those options in a number of restaurants, including Burger King, which added the Impossible Whopper to its menu in the fall of 2019.
New food technology can sometimes spark unnecessary fears among eaters, however, especially when a new food product is seen as unnatural or weird. Take, for example, the recent rumors warning consumers to beware the estrogen content in Impossible Whoppers and other Impossible Food products, lest the delicious, meat-free burgers cause men eating them to grow breasts.
Fears about soy products feminizing men have existed for quite a while. The Impossible Burger fear mongering, however, is a bit more recent. It stems from a 2019 story published by Tri-State Livestock News, a trade publication covering livestock agriculture. Written by James Stangle, who specializes in veterinary medicine, the story claims that four Impossible Whoppers a day contain 𠇎nough estrogen to grow boobs on a male.” That story was then picked up by conversative pundits such as Michael Savage, according to The Washington Post.
It seems silly to point out that few people, if any, are buying and consuming four Impossible Whoppers daily. But even if a man did decide to eat Impossible Whoppers for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack between, he needn’t worry about developing feminine secondary sex characteristics. For starters, the compound contained in Impossible Burgers isn’t human estrogen at all—it’s phytoestrogen, a plant isoflavone that acts similarly to human estrogen, but doesn’t have nearly the same strength, according to Insider. Phytoestrogen, which is often found in soy, can promote the effects of naturally occurring estrogen, which exists in all humans. But it can also suppress it, since it has both estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects. How phytoestrogen affects you depends on what your existing estrogen levels are as well as other individual biological factors. Regardless of whether it promotes or decreases the effects of naturally occurring estrogen, however, it still doesn’t have the strength to grow breasts in men.
Although Stangle didn’t include this citation in his piece, it seems his claims may have stemmed from a single case in which a Texas man in 2008 developed 𠇋reasts and breast soreness” from drinking three quarts of soy milk a day, according to Snopes. Those effects went away after he stopped ingesting that extreme amount of soy milk regularly. This isolated case from 12 years ago might be shocking, but it’s not enough evidence to sound the alarm on soy products in general. The validity of the feminization fears surrounding soy products is also belied by the number of countries that rely on soy products a plethora of Asian countries have been using soy beans for centuries without men in those societies suffering adverse or unexpected biological effects.
It’s worth pointing out that the feminization fears behind the Impossible Whopper estrogen rumors are inherently tied to sexism, homophobia and transphobia in some circles. Meat eating is also connected, in some men’s mind, to masculinity the idea of eating a veggie burger amounts to an assault on their very identity. There’s nothing to fear from eating a plant-based burger, however a bite of a charbroiled soy product won’t take away anyone’s man-card. So if you’re worried an occasionally meatless meal will turn you into a woman, don’t be. Instead, prove your masculinity by taming your fear of new foods.

Braising is the simplest way to prepare beet greens. Here's how to do it.
Swish leaves and stems vigorously in a big bowl of water to remove the sand from the leaves, which also gets lodged between the ridges of the stems.
Cut the stem and the thick part of the center rib from each leaf. The easiest way to do this is to fold the leaf in half along the rib. Chop the stems and leaves separately.
Film a large skillet with olive oil. Cook up some chopped onion, shallot, or garlic over medium heat, covered with the lid, until softened for 1 to 5 minutes.
Add the stems to the skillet along with 1/3 cup water and salt to taste and braise the chopped stems, covered, until tender for 4 to 6 minutes.
Finally, add the chopped leaves (and a few tablespoons of water if the pan looks dry) and simmer, covered, stirring occasionally, until the leaves are tender for 3 to 4 minutes.
How Much Gin?
Put them in a shallow bowl and pour in just enough gin to barely cover them.
How Long Do They Sit?
Allow the raisins and gin to stand uncovered (or covered with a towel to keep out dust) until the gin has nearly completely evaporated. The raisins will still be very moist. This may take from two days to more than a week, depending on environmental conditions.
How Many Gin-Soaked Raisins to Take?
Once the raisins are ready, store them in a tightly closed container. Refrigeration is not necessary. The “dose” is nine (delicious) raisins daily.
We hope your mother finds them helpful. Be sure to watch our video (above) on gin-soaked raisins as a home remedy for arthritis to get more details on the procedure for making this recipe.
Why can’t you eat more than 9? What happens if you do eat more?
Many people expect very specific instructions and answers like the question above. Please remember that these are not scientifically tested pharmaceuticals that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. This is mostly trial and error and grandmothers’ wisdom at work. We do not think anything bad would happen if you ate 10 raisins…or even a handful. Whether 20 would work better (or less well) than 9 is anyone’s guess.
Can I use any other alcohol? Why Gin in particular?
The original recipe was for gin and golden raisins. We suspect that the juniper in “regular” gin might be contributing something special. That said, some people have reported benefit from sloe gin.
Golden raisins soaked in gin were ineffective against my arthritis pain, but raisins in sloe gin were immediately and totally effective. Thanks for the suggestion.”
Regular gin is flavored with juniper berries, while sloe gin is flavored with sloe berries from the blackthorn bush, which was traditionally used for digestive disorders. This isn’t the first time we have heard that sloe gin with raisins may be helpful against arthritis pain. Other people have substituted vodka for gin. Those who shun alcohol report that vinegar and golden raisins can be helpful.

A Burlington Landmark on the corner of Maple and South Champlain Street, in Burlington, Vermont.
Once upon a time, Earl and Flora Handy decided to open a diner, called Handy’s Lunch. As you can imagine, back in 1945 when we opened, the diner was not quite the Handy’s you have come to know and love today. As well as serving breakfast and lunch, my grandparents also sold groceries and lived next door.
In 1958, while my grandparents were on vacation, my father, Robert E. Handy decided he would remove the grocery store section and put in a horseshoe counter, which is still there today. My grandparents were obviously not pleased.
In 1996, my beloved father passed away and the third generation (me) began its own legacy. Although I have made many changes, one thing remains the same…no, not just the great food and low prices…we continue to be a safe haven for all Yankee fans!
While Handy’s Lunch has always been a local favorite, in 2017, we were featured nationally on the Cooking Channel “Cheap Eats”. The spotlight of our segment was our own creation known as the “Macho Man”, part reuben, part patty melt and 100% amazing.
Casey Webb, host of Man v. Food on the Travel Channel had to make a visit to Handy’s Lunch to try and take down our “Chuck Norris”. This monstrous sandwich features 5 pieces of french toast with Vermont maple syrup, 4 eggs with American cheese, bacon, ham, sausage, a burger AND corn beef. This 1lb sandwich is not for the faint of heart. Did Casey beat the Chuck Norris? Tune in the Travel channel or stop in to wage your own war against the Chuck Norris!
The fourth generation of Handy’s, my twins, Genevieve and Nicholas are off to a good start in the business. They both love eggs and my cooking! As you can see, Handy’s is truly a family restaurant and we look forward to serving you for another 75 years!

1. Steak 'n Shake
Overall, Chick-fil-A and Steak 'n Shake were close contenders for the number one spot. Steak 'n shake won the top spot in my opinion because of the variety of flavors offered. With over 20 different flavors, ranging form the classic chocolate to specialty shakes inspired by iconic candy bars, it's a great reason for it to be the top choice. Also at a price of $3.69 a shake, it's pretty low on the price scale, so even better for our wallets.
If you're not into buying milkshakes and being adventurous, try out some of these tricks for taking your milkshake to the next level. You really can't go wrong with any of the shakes on this list though.
