This is a play on a paloma cocktail, a favorite from Mexico. Rather than using sweet grapefruit soda, we call for fresh grapefruit juice for a fruit-forward beverage with less sugar and more vitamin C than the classic. Calorie-free club soda adds refreshing fizz, while pomegranate’s distinct flavor and bright red color make this cocktail shine. In season from September to January, fresh pomegranates pack a powerful punch of heart-healthy polyphenols. The more the pomegranate seeds (also known as the arils) break down, the more color and flavor they release into the drink.

How to Make It

Muddle pomegranate arils, ginger, and lime wedge in a cocktail shaker. Add pomegranate juice, grapefruit juice, tequila, and 3 ice cubes; cover, and shake well for 15 seconds. Strain evenly into 2 highball glasses filled with ice. Top each glass with 2 oz. club soda. Garnish each with a grapefruit wedge, if desired.
